Briedis outpoints Glowacki to win WBO cruiserweight title
Mairis Briedis has been crowned WBO cruiserweight champion after a bizarre and controversial semi-final victory over Krzysztof Glowacki in Riga, Latvia.
The pair were meeting in the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series, with the winner to face either Oleksandr Usyk or Murat Gassiev in the final.
Briedis, who was fighting on home soil, started the fight strongly and was able to land some heavy shots on Glowacki in the early rounds.
However, Glowacki began to come into the fight in the middle rounds and was able to land a number of clean punches on Briedis.
The fight took a dramatic turn in the seventh round when Briedis landed an elbow on Glowacki's face, causing a cut above his eye.
The referee ruled that the elbow was unintentional and allowed the fight to continue, but Glowacki was clearly affected by the injury.
Briedis was able to take advantage of Glowacki's injury and began to dominate the fight in the later rounds.
In the end, Briedis was awarded a unanimous decision victory, with the judges scoring the fight 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113 in his favour.
The victory means that Briedis has now won the WBO cruiserweight title and will face either Usyk or Gassiev in the final of the World Boxing Super Series.
