Mexican Mayoral Candidate Murdered
Alfredo Cabrera Shot Dead at Campaign Rally
Guardsmen Secure Crime Scene
Alfredo Cabrera, a mayoral candidate in Mexico, was shot to death at his final campaign stop in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero. The government said on May 28 that at least 22 people running for local office have been murdered in Mexico since the start of the current election season.
Cabrera was killed on May 27 in the town of Chilapa de Alvarez. He was giving a speech at a rally when a gunman opened fire. Cabrera was hit multiple times and died at the scene.
The killing of Cabrera is the second high-profile assassination of a mayoral candidate in Mexico in recent weeks. On May 21, Fernando Puron, a candidate in the state of Coahuila, was shot to death outside his home.
The killings have raised concerns about the safety of candidates in the run-up to the June 6 elections. The government has deployed additional security forces to protect candidates, but it remains unclear whether these measures will be enough to prevent further violence.
