Operation Overlord, often referred to as D-Day, was the first day of the Allied attack on German-occupied Western Europe. Codenamed Operation Neptune, D-Day remains the largest seaborne invasion in history.
June 6, 1944: The Normandy Invasion
On June 6, 1944, Allied forces, primarily from the United States, stormed the beaches of Normandy in northern France. The D-Day invasion marked the beginning of the liberation of France from Nazi occupation.
